Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing are dental procedures performed on patients who have periodontal disease. Scaling and root planing are often collectively referred to as deep cleaning, and are more time and resource-intensive in comparison to regular teeth cleaning. By scheduling your scaling and root planing appointment with KK Dental, you can save your teeth and gums from the damage brought on by extensive gum disease.

When Do You Need Scaling & Root Planing?

Gum disease forms when plaque on your teeth hardens to tartar leading to the inflammation of your gums. Poor dental hygiene often leads to the accumulation of plaque and tartar. That’s why you must brush and floss every day to prevent this build-up. Following this up with regular dental cleanings at KK Dental will prevent periodontal disease. When left untreated, gum disease can lead to bad breath, bleeding gums, and tooth loss.

If you already have gum disease, deep cleaning will help to remove the built-up plaque and tartar, as well as the harmful bacteria from your mouth. We recommend scaling and root planing when the pockets of infections are too deep to respond to simple dental cleaning.

Your Scaling & Root Planing Appointment at KK Dental

Depending on your case, you may require several scaling and root planing appointments at KK Dental before all signs of disease can be eliminated. During each of the visits, the following will happen:

  • The dentist will remove accumulated plaque and tartar from your teeth and in between your teeth and gums using a dental scaler—this is what is known as scaling.
  • The dentist will, after scaling, smoothen your tooth roots to allow easy reattachment of the gums—this is the root planing part of the procedure.
  • If the dentist deems it fit, antimicrobial agents may be applied directly to the affected gums. Alternatively, the dentist may prescribe antibiotics that you can take at home to prevent infection.

KK Dental provides various anesthesia options to ensure the comfort of our patients. Our dentists are well-versed in the provision of scaling and root planing procedures, having performed hundreds of similar dental procedures before.
